Million Minute Family Challenge™
Exceeds Game-Playing Goal
BELOIT, Wis. – People across the United States joined together to play
games and make the 2006 Million Minute Family Challenge™
a success, recording a total of
1,253,770 game-playing minutes from September through December.
Patch Products, a leading manufacturer of board and card games, organizes the Million Minute Family Challenge
every year to encourage interaction and communication among family and friends by setting a national goal of
playing games for 1 million minutes during the four months. The 1.25 million game-playing minutes is the most
recorded since the challenge started in 2001.
More than 200 groups, clubs, classrooms and families registered as participating groups during the Challenge.
The groups logging the most minutes are:
1. Masonic Home of Missouri, Kansas City, MO: 79,040 minutes.
2. Cub Scout Pack 171, St. Teresa of Avila, in Cincinnati, OH: 51,947 minutes.
3. Kansas City Public Library, NorthEast Branch, Kansas City, MO: 36,308 minutes.
4. St. Wencesiaus Parish, Omaha, NE: 24,840 minutes.
5. Girl Scout Troop 2073, Pineland, TX: 21,751 minutes.
The Lam Family of Newaygo, Mich., recorded the most minutes for a single family, tallying 6,905.
Utah was the highest scoring state with 296,100 minutes, thanks to Sprucewood School in Sandy, Utah. The
school sponsored a reading program that rewarded children for reading books at home with time in the
classroom to play board games.
“Our students and faculty had a great time playing board games,” said Derek Cohen, teacher’s aide at
Sprucewood School. “The children liked playing the games so much that they often took their recess time to
continue playing. When we realized how much fun they were having, we encouraged the kids to go home and keep
a log of how much time they spent playing games with their families. Not only did they read more and have lots
of fun, but they had great family time, too.”
In addition to Patch, sponsors of the 2006 Million Minute Family Challenge included KOA, National Games
Week, Great Wolf Lodge, Blue Harbor Resort, MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) and iParenting Media.
