Malarky®, An Imponderables™ Bluffing Game

Based on the best-selling Imponderables® book series, players make up bluff answers to such thought-provoking questions as “Why do doughnuts have holes?” Then they have to try to pick the real answer from the Malarky! Here are some sample Malarky questions. We’ve provided two bluff answers along with the real one. Can you figure out which is the correct answer? Could you make up a better bluff?

1. What does “pop goes the weasel” mean?


  1. The weasel is the stem of a flower and the pop is when you snap off the flower bud, such as what kids often do with dandelions.
  2. The song is based on a 1795 manhunt conducted in London for a crazed killer. “Pop goes the weasel” refers to the subject being caught and ultimately meeting his fate.
  3. The phrase is about a tailor who blows all his money on booze and has to pawn his work equipment to make a living.

2. Why are cows usually milked from the right side?


  1. The harnesses used during milking are designed to accommodate milking from the right side.
  2. Cows typically lie on their left side, resulting in a buildup of milk in the right udder.
  3. Since most people are right-handed, milking from the right side gives the milker more ability to maneuver the bucket with the right hand.

3. Why is red wine not supposed to be chilled?


  1. Red wine contains the grape skins, which when chilled produces a more acidic taste.
  2. There is no real reason not to chill red wine, however it traditionally is served at room temperature.
  3. The colder red wine gets, the less flavor it has.

  1. So they won’t roll off buildings or other surfaces.
  2. Square pencils are easier to grip while wearing work gloves.

5. Why don’t migrating birds get jet lag?


  1. Birds tend to take breaks throughout their flight, which prevents jet lag.
  2. Birds might suffer from jet lag, but there is no scientific way to find out for sure.
  3. Jet lag comes from rapid flying across time zones from east to west or vice versa. Birds tend to migrate by flying north or south.
