Malarky®, An Imponderables™ Bluffing Game

Based on the best-selling Imponderables® book series, players make up bluff answers to such thought-provoking questions as “Why do doughnuts have holes?” Then they have to try to pick the real answer from the Malarky! Here are some sample Malarky questions. We’ve provided two bluff answers along with the real one. Can you figure out which is the correct answer? Could you make up a better bluff?

1. If Mrs. is an abbreviation for Missus, why is there an “r” in it?


  1. Originally, Mr. referred to a man and the plural Mrs. to a couple. It was felt the woman didn’t need a separate title, but over time the Mrs. became associated with the wife.
  2. It’s really an abbreviation for Mistress, not Missus.
  3. It’s a shortened form of the French word for betrothed.

2. Why don’t queen-sized sheets fit some queen-sized beds?


  1. The mattress industry changes the width of the mattresses so often, the linen industry can’t keep up.
  2. European-manufactured mattresses are slightly off the measurements of American-made mattresses.
  3. Some linen manufacturers make queen-size sheets and double-sized sheets the same measurements to save on costs.

3. Why does root beer generate more foam than colas or other soft drinks?


  1. There is a foaming agent that is added to create the foam.
  2. Root beer is made from plants that contain proteins which generate a lot of foam.
  3. Sarsaparilla (which gives the drink its flavor) creates foam when reacting with sugar.

4. Why do many streets and sidewalks glitter?


  1. Bits of natural glass and stone provide filler to the pavement.
  2. Tiny water particles that were trapped as the pavement hardened, reflect light.
  3. Recycled material is crushed into the mixed concrete.

5. Why do aquarium fish put pebbles from the bottom of the tank in their mouths, and then spit them out?


  1. Completely out of boredom.
  2. The fish are searching for food particles on the pebbles.
