Product Designer

The Product Designer oversees the development of all product lines of the company from conception to production, including writing product specifications, managing product safety and conducting product viability testing. The job functions listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Oversee the management of all new product submissions and act as liaison between inventors and the company.
  • Oversee product development meeting and new product timelines.
  • Conceptualize, research and evaluate new ideas objectively from a retail, target market and financial standpoint.
  • Develop and write rules for games and toys by defining play and play patterns.
  • Oversee the writing of game questions and/or contracts with outside writers.
  • Oversee the writing of package copy, product names, subtitles and catch-phrases along with the component and package design with copywriters and artists.
  • Manage product safety testing program, putting all products through a design evaluation to ensure products meet federal requirements and industry guidelines.
  • Manage product viability testing of both new ideas and working prototypes which may include facilitating on-site play testing, off-site focus group testing, and compiling data from testing sessions.
  • Maintain key awareness of competition in the market through attendance at trade shows.
  • Analyze seasonal sets at each of our accounts detailing products, price points and packaging to gain insight on specific projects.
  • Participate, under minimum supervision, in broad and varied assignments requiring originality, ingenuity, creativity and logistical problem solving.
  • Assess product in development finding cost efficiencies through investigation of vendors, materials and processes.
  • Interpret extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Establish attainable deadlines with supervisor that must be met.

  • Interact with other departments on regular basis
  • Perform other duties as required

    QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Toy Design, Industrial Design or Graphic Arts
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in product design; background of game, toy, or juvenile product industry a plus
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and printing processes commonly used in the toy business.

    SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of emerging design trends, new materials, printing and manufacturing processes available.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes including printing, converting printed materials, plastics molding including vacuum forming, injection molding and extrusion.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of ethical standards in creation, design, and manufacture of newly developed product.
  • Ability to work in a team environment in a self-directed manner.
  • Ability to handle a stressful work environment.
  • Ability to manage/prioritize multiple projects at same time
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to analyze collected data, identify and recommend a course of action in a simplified manner.
  • Ability to communicate orally within the company and with outside vendors.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts including calculating figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, and percentages as used in the toy and game industry

    WORK CONTEXT
  • Requires writing detailed directions and specifications for manufactured goods.

  • Requires use of personal computer, hardware and software technology, internet, electronic mail, writing letters and memos

  • Requires working with others in a group or team, with internal and external customers
  • Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.
  • Requires valid driver’s license
  • May require international travel
